It's hard keeping up with daily tasks and deadlines, let alone maintaining your health, your job, and other responsibilities amid uncertain times, leaving you little time for rest.

There are many distractions in this digital world, and there is always something (or someone) requiring your attention. But rest is an essential part of success, health, and happiness. No matter how hectic or busy your schedule is, resting and unplugging are critical to your long-term health.

The body heals itself

It was designed to thrive in a series of short sprints. This is why taking a break—even just for a few minutes—can refresh you so you can continue through your day. Breaks are brief cessations from work, physical exertion, or emotional stress. As well as improving mental health, they boost creativity, increase productivity, promote well-being, reduce stress, improve mood, and strengthen relationships. 

Rest depends on your individual needs. If you didn't sleep well, are angry, or are stressed, you may need more frequent breaks.

Stress causes your body to experience fight or flight, physiological arousal, that heightens your senses because of perceived danger. When you are in this state, you may experience an increased heart rate, blood pressure, slowed digestion, and increased hormones (like cortisol).   

During ancient times, the flight-or-flight response served as our ancestors' original means of survival. The modern world, however, provides us with many opportunities to experience this response at various times and in various situations. 

During rest, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, which opposes the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for flight or fight responses.

    Unplug from electronics 30-60 minutes before bedtime, and dim your lights to allow your body to produce natural melatonin. Maintain a consistent nightly routine.
